Daybreak

Daybreak, an interfaith group at 174 Walnut Street provides rest, relationships, resources and renewal for our homeless community. They provide showers and laundry facilities for those who wish to use them, phone and internet services, snacks and drinks and most importantly, a safe place to spend time relaxing during the day. Church members often give coffee, creamer, sugar, laundry detergent, personal hygiene items or cash to help Daybreak replenish supplies.

Don Lucas Memorial Christmas Tree

Don Lucas Memorial Christmas Tree: A seasonal effort to ensure that under clothed people in Macon can be warm, our Don Lucas is actually a Christmas tree that decorates the church sanctuary. For several weeks in December and early January, gifts of warm clothing (jackets, gloves, caps, coats, sweaters, even underwear and jeans) are placed under the tree. They are collected and delivered to Loaves and Fishes for distribution.

What you can do:  Bring any of the above items.

Events:  Christmas tree is available in December and January in the sanctuary for decoration.

Loaves & Fishes

Loaves & Fishes, an ecumenical group at 651 Broadway, stores food, clothing, and furniture for hungry and homeless people. They provide bathing facilities for those who wish to use them. High Street supports this effort through giving food, toilet items, clothes and furniture. We keep a large box in the backdoor foyer to collect the portable items which are then delivered to the Loaves and Fishes distribution center. Church members often give cash or Kroger certificates to designated shoppers who will buy needed items and take them to Loaves and Fishes.

What you can do:

    • Serve as a liaison between Loaves and Fishes and High Street Church
    • Collect and transport donations to Loaves and Fishes
    • Shop for needed items with donated money and certificates. In our back hallway, there is a bank of shelves. You can put anything in it that a homeless person could use – nonperishable food, clothes, toiletries, etc.

Share The Plate

Share The Plate: On the second Sunday of each month throughout the year, one half of the non-pledged donations are given to a recipient charitable organization. The Social Justice Ministry selects these organizations, makes announcements, and gives the money to the organization.

In 2019 the recipient organizations were HomePortMaconGA (homes for veterans), el refugio (safe visitation space for detained immigrants’ families), All About Animals (no kill dog and cat rescue and placement), Altamaha Riverkeeper (grassroots protection for Georgia’s largest river and watershed), NAACP (relief drive for residents of the closed Crystal Lakes apartments), Parks & Rec (summer camp scholarships), Rebuilding Macon (rebuild homes of challenged homeowners), Macon Volunteer Clinic (free primary medical and dental care to working adult residents), Mentors Project (mentoring high school students needing support outside their families), Path to Shine (after school mentoring), Macon Outreach (food pantry, clothes closet, etc.), and Loaves and Fishes (day life service center for food, clothing, showers, etc.).

What you can do:  Come to Church and give generously on the 2nd Sunday.

Usually eight to ten volunteers are needed to make the entire process run smoothly.

What you can do:  Come about 10AM on our assigned days. Wipe and set tables, prepare food to cook, cook, make tea or lemonade, serve, wash pots & pans, and/or clean up. Keep an eye on our newsletter for updates about upcoming opportunities to get involved!
