Religious Education at High Street
Unitarian Universalists do faith formation a little differently.
We recognize that our children and youth are holy and whole individuals with ideas, feelings, and questions that matter, and we consider it an honor to be a place where the future leaders of the Universe are safe to express themselves, try on ideas, ask big questions, and participate in the life of the congregation. It is joyful to experience their wiggles and giggles during worship because it reminds us that the congregation is alive and growing and evolving as all living things do.

What to Expect in RE at High Street
We currently offer one RE class for all ages every week during the service. Sometimes we have special intergenerational services where the kids stay in worship the whole time. Typically they exit the sanctuary with their RE teachers after the Time for All Ages, which happens about 15 minutes into the service.
Our RE classes are fun, creative, and very different from the traditional Sunday School classes many of us grew up with. We’re not afraid to explore big questions together or admit when we don’t know the answer – faith formation is a lifelong process and we never stop learning! The purpose of RE in a UU context isn’t to give kids the answers, but rather to give them the tools and support they need to navigate their “free and responsible search for truth and meaning” and find answers that resonate with them on their individual journeys.
In Summer 2023 we explored UU values through a creative lens using a curriculum about anti-racist art, and we will be moving into our autumn curriculum in September. We will be exploring The Magic of UU – “Learn how to conjure a better world through social action!” Our kids are brilliant and open-hearted and we’re confident they will create incredible positive change in the world, and we’re honored to have a part in helping them learn how to put their values and hearts into action.
If you have any questions or concerns about RE, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can use the form below to get in touch with our Director of Religious Education, Paula, and read a welcome letter from her here. We’re looking forward to getting to know you and your family!
