Churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples vary in what is expected of those who attend. Some churches refer to “Christmas” or “Easter” Christians, those who show up only for the major Christian holidays. Similarly, some of our Jewish neighbors only attend temple or synagogue during each years “High Holy Days.” Even at High Street Church we make a distinction between members, friends, and supporters, there being some expectation of higher participation from some than from others. As we begin a new chapter in our common life together with the arrival of a new minister, how will we “do church” together? What roles, tasks, responsibilities, opportunties will we share as we journey toward the Beloved Community which we all seek?
